Avoid Risks of Philanthropy Staff Turnover Through Succession Planning

Staff turnover creates risk for an organization. When the Director of Development gives their notice (hopefully two weeks!) that  is not the time to try and start understanding all the moving parts they have been managing. The amount of time required to get new talent up and running will either mitigate or exacerbate this risk. Here are key impact areas to consider:

  • Loss of Projected Donations
  • Loss of Donor Relationship Momentum
  • Negative Donor Experience
  • Negative Organizational Reputation

Leveraging Salesforce for Nonprofits to manage donor data and the activities supporting philanthropy for your organization will mitigate the risks associated with staff turnover. Donor data in a centralized database with clear visibility to recent and planned activities,  donation history and pledged donations enables successful transition from one team member to another. It allows for interim staff to keep momentum.

It can take months to fill strategic organizational positions in today’s employment market. Momentum is lost on all donation activity in those months. And then, if the data is in the previous staff member’s emails and spreadsheets, how many months will it take for the new person to get up to speed? Having philanthropy set back for a year is not an unreasonable outcome from the lack of succession planning for staff turnover.

And what about the donor experience?  What is the impression left when a donor who was committed falls off the radar? Then, weeks or months later, some new person starts communicating and it feels like they are starting over. It does not present your organization in the best light and it certainly does not say to that prospective donor, “your commitment to our work is important.”

Salesforce for Nonprofits does not just enable your team’s productivity today, it can help ensure continuity through organizational change. Succession planning enables momentum through the challenges of staff turnover!
